History of Jackson County
The first governor of Florida, Andrew Jackson, was elected in 1821. In those early years, Florida contained only two counties: St. John's County in the east, and Escambia County in the west. A year after being sworn in, the new governor signed a law adding a third county named in his honor. The new Jackson County was positioned in the middle of the first two. Years later Jackson County's western border was pushed further into Escambia County.
When it was incorporated, Jackson County contained no villages or towns. The court of the county convened at "Robinson's Big Spring" (now called "Blue Springs") for the year of 1822 and the "Big Choctawhatchee Spring" the next year. Chipola Settlement (today called Waddell's Mill Pond) was the site of the court in 1824.
Webbville, Jackson County's first community, was established January 1827. Marianna was established that September by Robert Beverridge, a Scotland native. Webbville, situated nine miles to the northwest of modern-day Marianna, was initially named the Jackson County seat of government; it flourished until a year later, when Beverridge and other residents of Marianna travelled to the state capital and convinced the state Legislature to move the county seat to Marianna by offering free government land, a courthouse, a public town square, and $500 to buy land to sell at auction to pay for the new government.
Beverridge succeeded, with the residents of Marianna; it became the new de-facto county seat. The promised courthouse was completed in 1829, which spurred Marianna's growth all the more. Several prominent residents of Webbville relocated to Marianna, and the L and N railroad decided not build in Webbville. That town no longer exists today.
