History of Destin
Situated on the coast of Florida's Panhandle, Destin is a city full of history extending back to the Native Americans in 600 AD. Explorers from Spain mapped Florida in the middle of the 16th century. Spain commissioned Don Francisco Tapia to map Florida's coast and just before 1700 he created the first map on record of the shores of East Pass. Destin's own history can be traced to 1845, when Captain Leonard Destin, a fisherman who relocated from New London in Conneticut to settle within Northwest Florida.
As Destin grew into one of Florida's top tourist destinations from its roots as an unknown fishing town, its residents realized that a government was fast becoming necessary. Florida officially granted Destin a charter in 1984 as a municipal town, though it was established 150 years earlier.
Affectionately called the "Luckiest Fishing Village in the World," Florida's most prestigious fishing vessels call Destin Harbor home. Besides fishing, Destin offers many other forms of recreation such as watersports like diving and snorkling, tennis, and golf. Florida's 100-Fathom Curve, which provides the fastest path to deep water in the Gulf of Mexico, curves closer to land in Destin than anywhere else in the state. People from the nearby cities of Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, and Crestview regularly travel across the Mid-Bay Bridge to enjoy Destin's beautiful beaches and wonderful waterfront restaurants, and snowbirds and vacationers from all over the world call Destin home during the winter and summer months. Over 11,000 residents call Destin home year-round.
