History of Navarre

Visionary Colonel Guy H. Wyman, a retired engineer in the US Army who originally settled in DeFuniak Springs, founded Navarre in 1925. Colonel Wyman had travelled the world and seen some of Earth's most beautiful areas. Colonel Wyman named the area after his wife's favorite northern Spanish province. Navarre was then unpopulated, but that changed in the 1960s when Navarre Beach Bridge was built. The bridge gave everyone the chance to enjoy Santa Rosa Island's pristine Gulf beaches and warm clear waters. Tourism soon boomed for Navarre, and affordable, attractive, and comfortable hotes, homes, and restaurants appeared on the beaches of Navarre. Conservation has become very important, and miles of unspoiled National Seashore are available for all to enjoy.
