History of Pensacola
As the Civil War ended, settlers moved westward, establishing villages and towns. Each new town quickly established commercial enterprises to jump-start its local economy, such as local attractions, banks, colleges, and hotels. Businesspeople quickly realized that joining forces in an all-volunteer association of business development benefited all. Thus, across America, locally-managed "Chambers of Commerce" were born.
The Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce held its first meeting on September 16, 1889, in the local Opera House. That meeting saw the election of the chamber's first chairman, railroad tycoon William Dudley Chipley. The area population had already swelled to nearly 10,000 as the local lumber and shipping industries boomed. This led to a rise in companies headquartered on Pensacola's waterfront that maintained both ships and their crew. One railroad ran north through the city to join the Nashville-Louisville system, and Colonel Chipley's men had constructed a new road that ran east to the Chattahoochee River. Professionals like doctors and lawyers also established themselves in Pensacola.
The port of Pensacola generated annual revenues of $14.5 million in 1900, making it Florida's largest port. Tampa, Florida's second-largest, only generated about $1.5 million annually in comparison. Many companies commenced operation at this time: Baars, St. Anthony's Hospital, Dunwoody and Company, American National Bank, Pensacola Drydock and Shipbuilding Company, and Southern States Lumber Company. Contractors like C. H. Turner and J. H. Crona found ample work. Pensacola's military presence also improved, notably during the Spanish-American War, which led to upgrades in local coastal defenses. Pensacola successfully lobbied the federal government for these improvements following 1898's Declaration of War; this indicates the Pensacola Chamber had instituted a department for military matters, which defended and promoted that integral piece of the local economy.
By 1904, Pensacola was reaping the rewards of the Chamber's hard work. The population steadily grew, and the Chamber had successfully courted national and international commercial interests. That year saw the number of steamships and sailing ships arriving in Pensacola to 267 and 147, respectively, which well over a million pounds of cargo between them totalling $2.8 million. The next year, the Pensacola Chamber underwent a "changing of the guard" and its new leaders and members worked hard together with county and city leaders to keep improving Pensacola's public services and facilities.
The Chamber helped in Pensacola's transition from naval shipyard to high-tech naval aviation center and from simple clay roads to national interstates. Due to its continued cooperation with all local government branches, the Chamber has been credited with improvements to industrial presence, the downtown sector, quality of life, local education, commercial interests, and business rights.
The following years brought Pensacola a number of changes: new structure of chamber committees, nationally-evolving trends, expanded services for members, commerce enrichment programs, emphasis on quality of performance, education reform, and many more.
The once-small association now boasts being nationally accredited, 1,600 business and 50,000 individual members, and a qualified staff of professionals. Has Pensacola's Chamber of Commerce had an impact? We think it has.
