History of Panama City Beach
Since its beginning, the economy of Panama City Beach has depended greatly on its natural beauty and historical significance. It is the home of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Bay County is richly woven with American history. The American Indians settled St. Andrews Bay before it became a community in the 19th century. Pirates would often lie in wait in the bay's many crevices, hoping to storm treasure ships en route to Mexico or Spain. Legends speak of many buried treasures on Shell Island's Spanish Shanty Point. St. Andrews Recreation Area was formerly a part of a military reservation on St. Andrews Sound in World War II. Circular platforms that once housed cannons are still on display near the rocky outcropping called the jetties. The outpost became a park in 1951 and spans 1200 acres.
The St. Andrews Recreation Area has become one of Florida's best recreational sites, and was named "America's Number One Beach" by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, an esteemed authority on coastal areas, in 1995. Panama City Beach is widely known for its one-and-a-half-mile stretch of soft, white-sand beaches, pristine natural sand dunes, and beautifully-clear water. The soft sand of Panama City Beach is composed of broken-down crystals of quartz. Over time the elements grind down the crystals, bleach and polish them, and deposit them on the shore. This process, free of human intervention, gives Panama City Beach its extraordinary beauty.
Panama City Beach hosts the Indian Summer Festival annually in October in Frank Brown Park. The three-day festival includes fresh, locally-caught seafood, art, and music from nationally-known entertainers.
